Ann Arbor Residents Divided On Adding Regulations For Airbnb Short-Term Rentals

Mark Spencer and Maria Zaborniak said it was about a year ago that someone renovated the house behind theirs and turned it into an Airbnb short-term rental property.

The house on Ann Arbor’s west side is beautiful and most guests who stay there are fine, they said, but about 15-20% of the time they have to deal with nuisances like loud partying.

“Sometimes we get football people over there and they’re in the backyard and it’s like an old Cheech and Chong movie,” Zaborniak said, referring to marijuana smoke.

“The listing says it can accommodate 11 guests and you can host parties there, so it invites that unfortunately, and it’s many one-night rentals,” Spencer said. “We’ve been woken up at like midnight, 1 o’clock, by screaming women. There’ll be girls partying.”
